Footnotes

  • Provenance: the collection of Thomas Goodge, New York, by descent

Note: the numerical series engraved onto the side of this pendant suggests that many such pendants were made; however the jade, along with its storage box, appears to be only the fourth of its type to be published in recent years. The first, preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is engraved as number 188 from the fu series to one side and displays the four-character mark to the other side. The storage box has an album leaf painted with branches of bamboo by the emperor and a wood cover inscribed with the four characters zhen fu yan qing. See The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jade Objects, volume 3 (Hong Kong, 1995), no. 127 (height 13.5cm). The second was sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong April 27, 2003 sale The World of Qianlong, lot 3 (height 14.8cm). The Sotheby's disk is also engraved with the four-character mark and number 169 from the zhi series. Its book-shaped storage box has a zitan cover inscribed with the four characters feng ji zhen fu matching the Qianlong emperor's title written on one of the album leaves. The Qianlong emperor painted blossoming chrysanthemums on the paper ground album leaf. The third example of slightly smaller size (height 12cm), appeared in the Shanghai Xinren sale of December 8, 2004, lot 1231.
