He began his apprenticeship at the age of thirteen and four years later made a tour of Austria, settling in Vienna for two years, where he worked for two years. By 1875 he had arrived in Paris, where he seems to have been associated with Zweiner. He first received major attention at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, where his extraordinary Grand Bureau won a gold medal. His main showrooms were at 170 Faubourg Saint-Antoine, but soon after 1900 he opened on the prestigious Place Vendome.
