Footnotes

  • Nero was born in captivity in Edinburgh in 1820 to the celebrated menagerist George Wombwell. Wombwell caused outrage in 1825 when he wagered 5,000 sovereigns that the lion could best six bulldogs in a baiting contest. Despite public condemnation the fight was staged and Nero, a relatively docile beast, was killed in the onslaught. Wombwell was painted as a profiteer, denounced by the press and the subsequent change in popular opinion was instrumental in the subsequent outlawing of baiting sports. For a full discussion of the subject see Myrna Schkolne, 'People, Passions, Pastimes and Pleasures, Staffordshire Figures 1810-35', p. 146.
