Footnotes

  • William Wyon (1795-1851) was appointed Chief Engraver in 1828, though he had performed many of the functions of that office for the previous 6 years due to the troubled relationship between Mint officials and Benedetto Pistrucci, Wyon's great rival. Among his many celebrated works the new coinage of Queen Victoria was particularly well received, the crowning achievement being this Five Pound piece. The reverse represents the queen as Una, the mythical damsel saved by St George from the dragon and the embodiment of Truth and Purity in Edmund Spencer's epic poem The Fairie Queene, She leads the British lion, her companion and protector.
