Footnotes

  • "All art is autobiographical: the pearl is the oysters autobiography" Federico Fellini Jan 20 1920 October 31 1993.

Federico Fellini was one of the great Neo-Surrealistic Italian Film makers with a career spanning four decades. Born in Rimini, a small coastal town on the Adriatic he was fascinated by vaudeville and circuses that visited his town and influenced his early career as a journalist and cartoonist specialising in caricatures. After the downfall of Mussolini and the end of the war, Fellini obtained his first major film break collaborating on the script of Open City. In 1950 he had his directorial debut with Variety Lights and his style of directing led to two of the most influential film works from Italy: La Dolce Vita 1960 and 8½ 1963 both starring his alter ego actor and collaborator Marcello Mastroianni.

Fellini Explored religion and religious contradiction, sexual oppressiveness and sensuality throughout his career. This is demonstrated in his artistic scribblings which were spontaneously drawn between filming scenes on set and in his office at Cinicitta.

The three sketches on offer were given as gifts to Michael Verona by Fellini while Verona worked at Cinicitta. The present owner worked with Verona and purchased these items after Fellini died. These have never been presented to the public or exhibited.
