A Very Rare Russian Gilt-Mounted Valour Sword Relating To The Napoleonic Wars
Reign Of Tsar Alexander I, Dated 1805-1814
With fullered single-edged blade (tip with some pitting) finely etched over half its length with the recipient's battle honours in Russian, each within a laurel wreath surmounted by two stars, the left side dated from 1805 to 1809, and the right side from 1810 to 1814, the forte etched and gilt with a martial trophy of arms against a blued stippled ground on each side, one side surmounted by the crowned cypher of Alexander I, and with crowned Russian Imperial eagle on the other, each side above an etched and blued Classical helmeted profile bust within a blued octagon and against an etched and gilt foliate ground, the back-edge etched and gilt with bladesmith's name 'W. Schaef & Sohn, Vlatoust' in cyrillic, gilt-copper hilt comprising double upturned shell-guard each inscribed in Russian on the inside 'For Bravery', one with applied red enamelled (slight damage) Order of St. Anne on the outside, rear quillon, faceted knuckle-guard and globular-pommel each cast and chased with foliage, the former stamped with maker's name 'Gittner' in a rectangle, the latter with threaded waisted button, and wooden grip bound with twisted silver wire, in original black leather scabbard (repaired, chape replaced) with gilt-copper locket with slender frog-hook

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £2,500 up to and including £300,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £300,000 up to and including £3,000,000;
and 13.9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £3,000,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
