Footnotes

  • After running out of money for painting materials at the RCA, Hockney found out that the graphic department supplied materials for free. His approach to etching was that of a painter, spontaneous and unecumbered by lenghty print processes incurred between drawing the image and seeing the end result. One of his earliest etchings, "Kaisarion", clearly displays this spontaneity and a relish to experiment with a new medium. The work was inspired by the Greek poet C P Cavafy, whose poems would also lead Hockney to create the series "Illustrations for Fourteen Poems from C P Cavafy" in 1966. (see lots 14-18)
