An historic cased, factory engraved and gold banded Metropolitan revolver belonging to Civil War Navy Commander George Beall Balch

Serial no. 1822,.36 caliber. 6 1/2 inch round barrel, the scroll-engraved lug featuring oval pictorial panels depicting warships under sail. Inlaid gold bands at breech of barrel and on cylinder. Cylinder, frame, hammer and gripstraps engraved with broad floral scrolls on a beaded ground. Gripstrap engraved Commander George B. Balch/U.S.S. Pawnee 1863. Mother-of-pearl grips with two-piece silver buttcap. Complete with blue baize-lined walnut case of English manufacture. Interior of lid with gilt-stamped trade label for Robert Jones of Liverpool. Accessories include powder flask embossed with oak leaf designs, Colt's Patent-marked bullet mold, nipple wrench, oiler and cap tin. Together with photocopies of biographical material on Commander Balch and his service aboard the U.S.S. Pawnee.
Condition: Very good. Barrel and cylinder retain most re-blued finish with few minor spots of pitting. Triggerguard/gripstrap retain 30-40 percent silver-plated finish. Excellent grips. Case with minor blemishes. Lining with minor staining and small tears. Accessories fine.

  • Note: George Beall Balch was born in 1821. Joined the Navy in 1837, attached to sloop Cyane in 1840 and was promoted to Passed Midshipman in 1843. During the war with Mexico he was engaged at Alvarado and Vera Cruz, served in the Mosquito Fleet covering the landing of General Scott and was present at the surrender of Vera Cruz in 1847. Commissioned as Lieutenant in 1850, he served on the sloop Plymouth and was wounded in Shanghai, China. Commissioned as Commander in 1862 and saw action in South Carolina. Commanding the steamer Pawnee as part of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, he helped rescue General Terry's forces from an attack by Confederate batteries. The Pawnee served throughout the rest of the war engaged in South Carolina. After the war he was commissioned Captain in 1866 and commanded the flag-ship Albany, North Atlantic Squadron, 1868-69.
