A Vanuatu slit gong drum
Consisting of a heavy partially hollowed-out log tapering somewhat towards the top and with a recessed post base, with central slit surmounted by a series of three stylized faces of graduated size, each with projecting circular flat eyes and prominent nose within a curving facial plain outlined in rows of raised notches, the bottom figure with arms in shallow relief, the reverse with a single face of distinct form, carved with a heart-shaped plain creating arching brows and broad triangular nose, the stylized body in shallow relief depicted by a series of complementary rectilinear forms.
