1958 Plymouth Fury
John Carpenter’s Christine
Columbia, 1983.
Chrysler power train, with late model transmission.

This car was created for the horror classic Christine based on the novel by Stephen King. A number of cars were built for many scenes in Christine, including the hero, stand-by, crash car, car on fire, cars destroyed, and for stunts. This was the #3 promotional exhibition car. It was not used in filming and so is in good mechanical and cosmetic condition.

Christine is the story of a beaten down and bullied high school kid who falls in love with a car named Christine. But the car is somehow possessed by an evil supernatural force, and a murderous will. It at first concentrates on revenge, massacring the bullies and even fetching our nerdy protagonist a top shelf girlfriend. But soon the evil pervades everything even our young erstwhile hero, and then Christine must die.

Christine began life as a 1958 Plymouth Fury. Although 5,800 Furies were built in that year, they have subsequently become quite rare. There were between 13 and 16 of the cars destroyed in the making of Christine, out of a total of 25 involved in the production. It’s interesting to note that in Stephen King’s novel, the car was a four-door, but this was changed to a two-door in the film when it was realized that Plymouth didn’t build a four-door 1958 Fury. Although all 1958 Fury’s were 'Banana Yellow' in color, the book mentions that this particular car was custom ordered in Ford red. Only in Stephen King’s world might this troubled beginning explain something of what was to come.
