The story of this 2003 Mopetta replica actually starts in Germany during 1956 with the original Brutsch Mopetta microcar. Egon Bruetsch was a specialist in plastics and had designed several microcars that had not reached series production. In 1956, he conceived the Mopetta, which used a tubular frame with a single front wheel and two out back. The left-hand wheel was powered by a 49cc two-stroke engine manufactured by ILO. The doorless body was extremely rounded, seated just one person and looked a great deal like a bumper car.

The tiny motoring object measured just 67 inches long and weighed a mere 172 pounds. On a diet of gasoline and oil mix it would achieve an astonishing 115 miles per gallon. Shown at the 1956 Frankfurt Motor show, auto dealer George von Opel expressed interest and production commenced. By 1958, only 14 units had been sold and production ended.

With only four complete Mopettas known to exist, the odds of finding one were exceedingly slim. As a result, renowned British microcar restorer Andy Carter used one of the original Mopettas to take a mold and he fabricated a tubular chassis. Most of the donor parts came from a 2003 Suzuki, including the two-stroke engine.

Registered and titled as an automobile in California, it features an electric starter, turn signals, disc brakes and independent rear suspension. Even though the little Suzuki engine is a two-stroke, it has automatic oil and gas mixing. It is also easy to drive thanks to an automatic transmission. And it has something few vehicles can boast of at that gasoline costs over $2 a gallon—it gets 100 miles per gallon.

Finished in black with a red interior, this modern day Mopetta has all the charm of the original, but is a thoroughly modern and unique iteration. It is fun, unusual and incredibly frugal. You’ll also never see another one.
