1966 Steyr-Puch 650TRII Saloon
Chassis no. 5049013
“The 650TR is a tiny rear-engined car, based on the Fiat 500 bodyshell, with a 650cc engine. Driven by Sobieslaw Zasada, a Polish driver who would later move up to driving Porsche 911s, this amazing little device, which seemed to buzz like a bee when in full flight, was good for 90mph and had acceleration to match a 1,000cc Mini Cooper” A-Z of Works Rally Cars, Graham Robson.

Austrian arms manufacturer Steyr turned carmaker after WWI, merging in 1935 with Austro-Daimler to create the Steyr-Daimler-Puch combine. Steyr did not resume production of its own cars after WWII, instead manufacturing FIATs under licence for the Austrian market. In 1957 Steyr started making the Nuova 500 but used its own flat-twin engine in preference to the FIAT original, and this model ultimately evolved into the 660cc 650TR II.

Despite its diminutive size, the 650TR proved an extremely capable rallycar in the hands of works driver Sobieslaw Zasada, who came within a whisker of winning the 1965 European Rally Championship following a string of leader-board finishes and class wins. Zasada did almost as well the following year.

Sold new in France, this 650TRII has been in the vendor’s possession since 1998 and was restored in 2002 by Thierry Argenson of Sixty Racing Service. The car was rebuilt to rally specification with full-race engine, race exhaust, straight-cut gearbox, etc, and has seen action in the hill climbs and Coupe des Alpes historic rallies. Finished in red with black interior, the vehicle is presented in very good condition in every respect and offered with French Carte Grise and valid Contrôle Technique.
