Massive Green/Black Table Top
Stromatolite
3.5 billion years old
Precambrian
Minnesota
The microscopic fossils within this massive, irregularly shaped stone slab tell a story almost as old as the Earth itself. Stromatolites are mounded stone structures built up over millions of years by successive layers of cyanobacteria, primitive bacteria that trapped sedimentary material, creating alternating layers of fossils and sedimentary stone as early as 3.5 billion years ago. Cyanobacteria, which were extraordinarily plentiful during the Archaean and Proterozoic Eras, are credited with having generated enough oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere to transform early Earth’s poisonous gases into a composition that made life as we know it possible. The slab is suitable for use as a tabletop. Measuring 79 in. x 36 in x 2 3/16 in. in thickness
