The ex-Gianclaudio 'Clay' Regazzoni
1979 March 792 Formula 2 Single Seater
Chassis no. 792/8
A landmark car for March, the 792 was the copmany's first proper ground-effect design. After a difficult development period characterised by frequent suspension failures as the team learned to cope with the increased cornering stresses generated by their new car, the 792 eventually came good, works driver Marc Surer winning the 1979 Formula 2 Championship for the Bicester-base manufacturer.

In 1979, this car's chassis number '792/8' was appllied to one of the two cars of this type campaigned by Team Everest and driven regularly by none other than the great Gianclaudio 'Clay' Regazzoni, former Ferrari works driver and that year Williams F1 team number two to future (1980) World Champion Alan Jones. '792/8' was driven by Regazzoni and Ferrante Ponti on numerous occasions in 1979 without success, before Regazzoni crashed the car at Mugello in May. The number '792/8' reappeared on a rebuilt car run by the Trivellato Racing Team, under whose auspices Siegfried Stohr achieved a 7th place (Zandvoort, July) and a 5th place (Misano, August) in the car before the '79 season's end.

This car was restored by Penske Indycar designer J. Travis, who purchased it in the mid 1980s and carried out a stress test of the tub before reskinning it. A new water radiator, fuel cells/pumps, and crown-wheel/pinion were fitted in 1996. The car is described as 'rebuilt,' but will require a complete inspection before track use. Its Hart 420R engine is equipped with American MSD ignition (replacing Lucas) and rated 'the best.' Competition history includes 1996 SVRA Watkins Glen F1 race (1st) and by Monoposto Racing as eligible for the Formula 70 Series, running a flat bottom without skirts.
