1948 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet
Serial Number to be Advised
The Lincoln Continental was the joint creation of Lincoln president Edsel Ford and designer Bob Gregorie. Using the Lincoln Zephyr as a starting point, the purpose of the exercise was to create a distinctive and stylish Lincoln for Edsel to use on vacation in Florida. The car was so beautiful and compelling that it was a natural decision to put it into production for 1940.

Mechanically, the Continental relied on tthe Zephyrs flat-head V-12 engine and three-speed manual transmission. For 1940, the displacement was 292 cid and horsepower was 120. The wheelbase was 125 inches and though there were solid axles front and rear, the drum brakes were hydraulically-actuated.

When automobile production resumed after World War II, the first new Lincolns were little more than 1942 models with minor styling updates. For 1948, Lincoln offered a pair of Continentals and trio of Standard Lincolns. They all used the same 125-inch wheelbase and the engine had grown to 305 cid and output was up to 130 horsepower.

The car on offer continues the Wiglesworth emphasis on good unrestored vehicles. This cabriolet still wears its original black paint and the tan broadcloth and red leather interior with which it left the factory. The carpets, seats, door panels and other trim are all original. Some minor conservation work will ensure that the interior will not need replacement. The beige cabriolet top was replaced many years ago and shows staining and wear. That cannot be said of the chrome, which is characterized as "wonderful," or of the excellent original woven trunk lining.

The V-12 is strong and runs well, and all accessories work including the hydraulic mechanisms for the top, seat and windows. The instrumentation and all original plastic knobs are near flawless, and the vacuum-operated power antenna actually works, as do the radio and clock.

A low mileage car that is mechanically excellent, this lovely old Lincoln Continental is ideal for a new owner who favors preservation over restoration.
