Lot 1556
1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II 40/50hp Town Car

Sold for US$ 126,000 inc. premium
1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II 40/50hp Town Car
Like its Silver Ghost predecessor, the New Phantom was also produced by Rolls-Royce of America Incorporated, a subsidiary set up in December 1919 when the parent company purchased the American Wire Wheel Company's plant in Springfield, Massachusetts. Unlike its British-built counterpart, the American product could be ordered with 'factory' bodywork, usually by J B Brewster, the latter having been taken over by Rolls-Royce in December 1925.

The decline and fall of Rolls-Royce as a manufacturer in North America had two fundamental causes: the October '29 Wall Street Crash and the almost simultaneous introduction in England of the heavily revised and much improved Phantom II, re-tooling for which the US company could not afford. It was not quite the end of the story however, as Springfield continued to assemble the Phantom I for a few years as well as importing some 125-or-so left-hand drive Phantom II chassis from England for bodying by American coachbuilders.

Left-hand drive Phantom II chassis number '293AJS' wears town car (sedanca de ville) coachwork by Brewster. Brewster bodied 18 Phantom II chassis, this car - body number '18' - almost certainly being the last. The vehicle was delivered new in October 1933 to first owner Mrs Loraine Manville Gould of the famous railroad/asbestos dynasty. The second (previous) owner - a member of the Zeller family, manufacturers of Blue Crown spark plugs and other after-market products - was given the car as a present on his 16th birthday in 1966. (Zeller Corporation's 'Blue Crown Special' cars were three-time Indianapolis 500 winners with Mauri Rose and Bill Holland).

Finished in dark Brewster green with black leather upholstery to the front compartment and green cloth to the rear, the car features a folding top to the driver's compartment, dual side-mounted spares and its original leather-covered luggage trunk. We are advised by the current owner that the engine benefits from a recent tune-up. This imposing formally bodied Phantom II is offered complete with mascot, owner's manual and Rolls-Royce Ltd correspondence, and is expected to possess a current title deed by time of sale.
