KERN, JEROME. 1885-1945.
KERN BIBLE FOR ORCHESTRAL ARRANGEMENT OF "SHOWBOAT."
Jerome Kern's masterpiece, Show Boat, is perhaps the most influential Broadway musical of the twentieth century. Co-written with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II and based on the novel by Edna Ferber, Show Boat's dramatic arc and tragic subplots indicated a departure from the typical fluff that dominated the Broadway stage to 1927. Not only does Kern's show resonate with intensity, nearly every song has become a standard, including "Old Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Why Do I Love You," "Make Believe," and the haunting "Bill."
In 1941 the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra asked Kern to produce an arrangement of the songs from Show Boat appropriate for the concert hall. Kern demurred, claiming that orchestration was not his strength, but with help from some of the arrangers at Twentieth Century Fox, he did produce a medley for symphonic orchestra, a portion of which arrangement we offer here.
This lot includes the following:
1. [Bible.] Autograph Musical Manuscript of Jerome Kern, in pencil, 2 pp, folio, n.p., [1941], on yellow staff paper, being a portion of Kern's bible for the orchestral version of Showboat, some toning, smudging and thumbing to leaf. Page 1 contains 22 measures, including "Verse Why Do I Love You" and "Verse of Bill," plus 14 measures written out and scratched through; page 2 contains two measures of orchestration for unidentified song.
2. [Orchestration.] Autograph Musical Manuscript in various hands, including Kern's, in pencil and ink, 16 pp, elephant folio staff paper with "Twentieth Century Fox Studios" imprint, n.p., [1941], being full orchestrations of the Kern medley, uncluding measures 109-116 (2 pp), 240-260 (6 pp), 522-537 (4 pp), and 650-665 (4 pp), some mild toning and thumbing, corners of leaves bumped. Page 109-116 contains a phrase from "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man."
3. Inscription in Kern's hand on brown parcel paper, "Show Boat / Bib. of original manuscript and orchestration for Symphonic Orchestra / Aug. 1941," paper creased and folded, torn in several places, fragments loose but present. The original wrapper Kern used to store the score.
