Hopi Polychrome Jar
Nampeyo, with sharply flaring underside, compact curving shoulder and tapering neck, with solid color octagonal surround about the open mouth, enclosed within a square and offset by four opposing versions of the eagle tail design, with box devices and groups of feathers, alternating with pairs of curving scrolls or beak motifs, very minor restoration.

@Provenance:
Inscribed on the base: "Made by Nampeyo, a Tewa potter, at Hano/ J. Walter Fewkes/ presented to Eve Lummis by Charles Lummis - June - 1906/ presenter." Jesse Walker Fewkes, the famous anthropologist, worked with Nampeyo at the beginning of the 20th century, helping to popularize the work of this innovative potter. He gifted this jar to Charles Lummis, a founder of the Southwest Museum in the Los Angeles area, in 1906 as indicated. The jar has remained in the Lummis family for two generations since that time.
