c.1982 Suzuki GSX1000R Works Yoshimura 16-valve Race Engine
Engine no. 84001
This engine was part of a remunerative package put together by Heron Suzuki to assist Pip Higham and help maintain their product at the forefront of British Pro-Stock drag racing. It was never subsequently used and has remained covered over in a dry, centrally heated workshop for over 20 years. Engine number ‘84001’ is one of only a handful built by Yoshimura to be used in Britain’s production-based Formula 1, as it was known at that time. Its predecessor, the 8-valve GS1000-based engine, had dominated in the hands of riders such as Mick Grant, Roger Marshall, John Newbold and Graham Crosby, and the same was expected of the 16-valver. However, Formula 1 regulations reduced the maximum engine capacity to 750cc and the GSX1000R was abandoned early, before its true potential could be realised.
