Like AC, Jensen is a British carmaker with a glorious past and chequered recent history. Since the original Jensen Motors Ltd ceased trading in 1976 the marque has been periodically revived, the most recent attempt getting off the ground in 1998 when the prototype Jensen S-V8 roadster was displayed at the Motor Show. An all-new design, the S-V8 featured a steel monocoque chassis/body clad with lightweight, pressed aluminium outer panels in a modern ‘retro’ shape cleverly recalling the lines of Jensen’s classic CV-8 coupé of the 1960s. Ford’s Mustang Cobra 4·6-litre quad-cam 32-valve V8 engine provided the motive power, its 325bhp arriving at the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. A top speed of 160mph and 0-60mph in under five seconds were claimed. Priced at around £40,000, the S-V8 was well received and firm orders taken for 300 cars. Production eventually got underway at Jensen’s new factory at Speke, Merseyside in August 2001 and almost immediately ran into difficulties as finance dried up. Receivers were appointed in July 2002 and the workforce of 35 laid off after only 20 cars had been produced. SV Automotive of Carterton, near Witney subsequently purchased the remaining partly-built cars from the administrator with the intention of completing 12 and retaining the rest as spares. Daily Telegraph motoring correspondent Tony Dron sampled an S-V8s in 2003, reckoning it, by a long way, the best Jensen ever. “First impressions were good and the more I drove it, the more impressed I was. The fundamental design is sophisticated and the chassis is packed with expensive, high quality components. It has that fundamental integrity in its construction, the sort of car that a big company would make, just as Jensen Motors claimed.”
This car, chassis number ‘0001’, is the first of its kind registered for the road and comes with history file including the information pack from the model’s launch in 2001. Offered with Swansea V5 and MoT to May 2006, the vehicle has covered 3,563 miles from new and remains ‘A1’ throughout.
