Footnotes

  • Combining Italian styling and chassis engineering with American V8 power has resulted in some of the world’s most exciting cars, the Mangusta by Qvale Automotive Group being one of the very latest. One of America’s most distinguished motoring dynasties, the Qvale family began by importing MG cars in 1947, later adding a host of other European marques to its portfolio, including De Tomaso whose Bigua concept car was the new Mangusta’s progenitor. Styled by Marcello Gandini (also responsible for the Lamborghini Countach and Diablo) and engineered by ex-F1 chassis man Enrique Scalabroni, the Bigua was first shown at the Geneva Salon in 1996. Lacking the funds to produce the car, its creator licensed the design to Qvale, though legal wrangles would eventually prevent use of the ‘De Tomaso’ name. Produced at Qvale’s new factory in Modena, Italy during 2000 and 2001 only, the 150mph Mangusta is powered by a Ford Mustang 4.6-litre 320bhp quad-cam V8, with many of the car’s other components, including the five-speed manual transmission, being sourced from the ‘Blue Oval’. The impact-resistant composite-moulded bodyshell clothes a galvanised steel box-section chassis tub, the latter’s outstanding stiffness enabling precise set-up of the all-round wishbone independent suspension. Cleverly, the roof centre section is removable, fitting into the boot, while the powered rear section can be fully retracted: thus the Mangusta can be a closed coupé, a Targa or conventional convertible.
One of just 278 Qvale Mangustas manufactured, of which a mere 18 were allocated to Europe, chassis number ‘003’ is the sole right-hand drive prototype made and has automatic transmission and a unique dashboard and tail lamps. Never registered for the road, it has covered circa 640 miles from new, 350 of them driving from Germany to this sale! Finished in pearlescent red with tobacco leather interior, the car incorporates a host of desirable features and options including ABS, ASR, limited-slip differential, cruise control, air bags, xenon headlights, power locks and windows, air conditioning, remote alarm, anti-theft device, Nakamichi sound system and 18 in alloy wheels (17 in standard) shod with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres.
The vehicle is offered with Italian ‘Certificato di Confirmato’ and also a German registration document (KFZ-Brief) enabling it to be registered in any EU country without incurring further customs duty/VAT (with the possible exception of local luxury taxes). Offered without reserve.
