1929 Singer Junior 8hp Delivery Van
Registration no. MW4478
Chassis no. 12578
Engine no. 13296
Introduced at the Motor Show in 1926, Singer’s 8hp Junior was a high quality light car powered by an 848cc, four-cylinder, overhead-camshaft engine. Like many of its contemporaries, the Junior chassis was used for a light commercial vehicle, the 5cwt Delivery Van, which arrived in 1928 together with the Light Delivery Van, the latter being based on the 10/26hp chassis. Costing £135, the 5cwt van used a modified Junior chassis up-rated with shock absorbers and stronger rear springs. Using celluloid screens instead of glass side windows helped keep the cost down, while a choice of single or double rear doors gave access to the generously proportioned 60 cubic feet load area.
Singer Owners Club records indicate that this Junior 5cwt van was first registered in the summer of 1929 to a Mr H E Munday, of Hampshire. After only two years of use, the vehicle was laid up in 1931 and subsequently sold to a Mr F James, also of Hampshire. In 1971 it was advertised for sale and passed into the ownership of a Mr D Akehurst in Kent, a gentleman known to the current owner who purchased the vehicle in 1983. Accompanying correspondence records that the original logbook was lost and a DVLA V5 issued in 1984. While in present ownership the van has been garage stored on blocks and preserved in wonderfully authentic condition, even down to the original tyres (still inflatable) and battery. A mere 8,053 miles have been recorded and the mechanicals appear to be sound. The only non-original item noted is the radiator cap. While the floorboards and interior plywood skin have suffered from woodworm, the timber body frame is reported as quite sound. A relatively straightforward and potentially most rewarding restoration project, the vehicle possesses a Swansea V5c registration document and is offered with Singer Junior and Rotax electrical manuals.
