Sold for £ 1,265 (US$ 1,593) inc. premium
1931 Mathis PY Coupe
Chassis no. 602826
Founded in Strasbourg in 1898, Mathis built only a handful of prototypes in its early years, subsequently manufacturing Ettore Bugatti’s Hermes designs around 1904 - 1905 before introducing its first ‘own-design’ production car in 1910. The latter was a conventional 2-litre, four-cylinder sidevalve, but Emile Mathis’s reputation would be founded on a range of much smaller cars, commencing with the 1,100cc Babylette and 1,300cc Baby. Mathis continued to introduce larger models after WWI, but it was the success of his light cars that enabled the company to claim fourth place among French manufacturers by the mid-1920s behind Renault, Citroen and Peugeot. The 1.2-litre PY was produced between 1931 and 1933. Powered by a four-cylinder sidevalve engine displacing 1,231cc and producing 29bhp at 3,300rpm, the PY was constructed on a 95.3”-wheelbase chassis and available in saloon, coupé and drophead coupé body styles, all with two doors.
The vendor purchased this PY Coupé (right-hand drive, like many pre-war French cars) in April 2000 in Isle sur la Sorgue, Provence, from one Robert Legier, who had owned it since 1954 and kept it stored in his barn. Purchase as a restoration project (in the event unrealised) it has not been touched since acquisition and is offered without reserve.
