Retired racing driver Eric Bitter’s ‘SC’ was introduced in 1981 as a two-door coupé using the proven Opel Senator 3-litre engine and drive-train. The exclusive, hand-made Bitter was a byword for exemplary build quality and necessarily expensive: Bitter’s advertising slogan, ‘Only the privileged minority can drive the prestigious few’ being no mere flight of copywriter’s fancy, as the 140mph SC Coupé cost approximately £39,000 in 1985/86.
This rare, right-hand drive, SC Coupé has the Mantzell-developed 3,848cc engine producing 210bhp at 5,100rpm and 260lb/ft of torque at 3,400. It is believed that only 19 of these later 3.8-litre cars were sold in the UK, this automatic-transmission example being the first of its kind displayed at Earls Court. Previously the property of Bitter Owners Club luminary Peter Bowles, and registered with the Bitter Club, the car comes with fully documented service/maintenance history from new, including all expired MoTs confirming the circa 43,000 mileage total. Major refurbishment undertaken has included an engine rebuild by a Bitter specialist and a more recent top-end check-over. We are advised that a new viscous fan and water pump have recently been fitted and that the car was recently driven from Scotland to London with no apparent problems. Finished in Steel Blue metallic with Italian golden cream kid-glove leather interior, the car comes with current MoT/road fund licence and Swansea V5.
