1956 Bentley S1 Sports Saloon
Coachwork by H J Mulliner

Registration no. LAS 763
Chassis no. B24BA
Engine no. BB17
Despite the popularity of Rolls-Royce’s ‘standard steel’ bodywork, discerning customers, in particular those who desired an open car, something not offered by the factory at this time, continued to patronise the handful of coachbuilding firms that remained in business after WW2. Associated exclusively with Rolls-Royce and Bentley after 1945, the London-based firm of H J Mulliner was purchased by Rolls-Royce in 1959 and merged a few years later with already-owned Park Ward. H J Mulliner was responsible for the first Bentley Continental, an outstanding design by any standard, and its two-door bodies on both Rolls and Bentley chassis are recognised as among the era’s most elegant.
Eventually, from 1957, H J Mulliner was permitted to offer a four-door, six-light saloon on the Bentley Continental chassis, to which was given the evocative name ‘Flying Spur’. The latter was based on a similar design - number ‘7401’, a development of the lightweight sports saloon coachwork seen previously on the Bentley MkVI and R-Type - that had been offered on the non-Continental Bentley S1 chassis from 1955 and would later become available on that of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.
One of three Bentley S1s bodied by H J Mulliner in ‘7401’ style, ‘B24BA’ was built to special order in 1956 for an eminent London QC, incorporating added features such as a cocktail cabinet and flask, with sandwich box in the front doors. It has formed part of two major collections abroad and is - we are advised - in excellent condition bodily and mechanically, though in need of re-commissioning following a period in storage. Finished in black with dark silver top and red leather interior, the vehicle is offered with original Rolls-Royce and H J Mulliner build sheets, various expired MoTs (most recent September 2004) and Swansea V5. A beautiful and eminently usable modern classic, it was displayed at the RREC’s Boughton House Concours in 2004.
