1904 Rexette 5hp Forecar
Registration no. A 8912
Chassis no. 3259
Engine no. 3259
‘The King of Little Cars’, the Rexette is an example of that delightful Edwardian contrivance, the forecar: a halfway house between the motorcycle and car. Produced by the Rex Motor Manufacturing Co Ltd, of Coventry and priced at 100 guineas, the Rexette featured a car-type frame, Rex’s own water-cooled, 5hp, single-cylinder engine with handle starting, a two-speed gearbox and brakes on all three wheels. By 1904 the three-wheeler had gained semi-elliptic springing and in October that year The Motor reported that the Rexette’s ‘ease of manipulation, easy steering and vibration-less running’ were most marked and that it achieved an effortless 30mph. The Rexette proved to be an able performer and was capable of climbing the formidable l-in-5 Sunrising Hill in Warwickshire with two passengers on board, in addition to the driver.
This example is splendidly turned out in maroon livery with matching upholstery and comes with Veteran Car Club Dating Certificate (No. 304, issued in 1952) and Sunbeam MCC Pioneer Certificate (No. 1571, issued in 2000). Records indicate that it is one of only four single-cylinder models known to exist that are currently dated prior to 1905, in addition to two 1905 twins. The vehicle is reported as substantially original apart from the paintwork and wooden flooring, which were renewed in the 1980s, while its later Amac carburettor has been in place since at least the early 1950s. The trembler coil and wiring were replaced in 2000.
Described by the private vendor as reliable and an easy starter, the car has been used regularly by him and comes with front/rear acetylene lighting, spare (correct) ‘surface’ carburettor, substantial history file, old-style buff logbook and copies of two books by Peter Roberts in which it features. ‘A 8912’ retains its original London registration and possesses a valid MoT certificate (March 2006), current road fund licence and Swansea V5. A useable and practical vehicle eligible for both the London-Brighton vehicle and motorcycle runs.
