1960 Jaguar Mk2 4.2-Litre Saloon
Registration no. 7565 MK
Chassis no. 201818DN
A progressive development of the Mk1, Jaguar’s first unitary-construction saloon, the Mk2 debuted in October 1959. With the Mk2’s arrival, the 3.8-litre version of Jaguar’s XK six became available for the first time in the company’s medium-sized saloon alongside the 2.4- and 3.4-litre units already seen in the Mk1. In top-of-the-range, 3.8-litre, manual/overdrive configuration, the Mk2 was a genuine 125mph car capable of reaching 60mph in 8.5 seconds, outstanding figures for a saloon of its size even by today’s standards. However, although it powered the E-Type sports car and the MkX and 420 saloons, the largest, 4.2-litre member of the XK engine family was never offered in the Mk2.
Combining the classical good looks of the Mk2 with the superior technology of its ultimate replacement - the XJ6 - this veritable ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ benefits from extensive upgrading. The car has the 4.2-litre engine from an XJ6 coupled to an XJ40 four-speed automatic gearbox, while additional improvements to the mechanicals include power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, oil cooler, alternator electrics, up-rated brakes and competition chromed wire wheels. The interior boasts XJ6 reclining front seats, inertia reel seatbelts front and rear, electric windows, Kenwood stereo system, ashtray-mounted switchgear and new woodwork. Other specification highlights include air conditioning, central locking and Thatcham Category 1 alarm. Its graceful lines enhanced by Coombs-type rear wheel arches, the coachwork is finished in British Racing Green, which is perfectly complemented by oatmeal leather upholstery to the interior. The accompanying invoice from Racing Green Cars Ltd, dated 23 September 2003, which relates to many of the above-listed modifications, totals £15,860. Presented in good condition throughout, the car is offered with old bill of sale (May 2003), fresh MoT and Swansea V5 registration document.
