Footnotes

  • Foskett (Collecting Miniatures, 1979), describes Thorburn as, "one of the last really important Scottish miniaturists". In 1894, his son Archibald (known for his paintings of birds) exhibited some of his father's best work in London, including the present lot.
    The present lot possibly portrays Mary Rashleigh (b.c.1823-1852), who married, in 1843, Jonathan Rashleigh, of Menabilly, Cornwall (1820-1905). Born Mary Pole Crichton-Stuart, she was the daughter of Sir William Stuart Crichton-Stuart and Henrietta Maria Sarah Pole.

25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £10,000 up to and including £450,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £450,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
