Footnotes

  • Horatio, son of Hercules and Henrietta Ross was born at Rossie Castle. He was named after his godfather Lord Horatio Nelson, a longtime correspondent of his father. He was MP for Aberdeen and was regarded as one of the greatest all-round sportsmen of his day. Today he is better known for his amateur photography. He was a founder and president of the Photographic Society of Scotland, where he recommended fellow amateurs should use their cameras to capture the beauty of the Highlands rather than using them for portraits. Examples of his photography can be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

The presence of two signatures and dates on the present lot suggests that whilst Holmes originally painted Ross in 1830, he reworked the portrait when he was commissioned to paint Ross's young wife in 1834. For a portrait of the sitter's wife, see lot 168.
