Footnotes

  • Charles Inglis was a son of Admiral John Inglis. He was promoted to the rank of Commander in 1829. After this time he never served afloat. He died in 1870. This portrait, painted circa 1835, shows him wearing scarlet facings. During the reign of William IV, from 1831-37, the Royal Navy abandoned white facings in favour of scarlet. This practice was reversed on the accession of Queen Victoria.
