Footnotes

  • This manuscript is a copy of the Divan of Manuchehri Damghani (died circa 1040-41) with a preface by Reza Quli Khan Hedayat, in which he states that he has taken on the task of collecting material on Manuchehri because it had not been done properly before. He found some information in Shiraz in 1831, some of which he included in his book Majma' al-Fusaha, and more on Manucheri is given here at the beginning.
The scribe/editor Muhammad Husain, known as Adib, has corrected Manuchehri's Divan by the request of his friends Aqa Mirza Raqim and Mulla Muhammad Sadiq Akhund who had already published the Divan.
Muhammad Husain (1830-1907) is a known writer and poet of his time. He received the title Forough from Nasir al-Din Shah in 1874. Later on he worked in the Government Publishing House in charge of the translation section where he translated many Arabic and French texts into Persian. He was titled Dhika' al-Mulk and appointed head of the Royal Translation House in 1892. (See M. Bamdad, Dictionary of National Biography of Iran, 1700-1900, vol. III, Teheran 1966, pp. 384-88).
The inscriptions on the covers state that the Divan of Manuchehri Damghani was completed by the order of Amir Dust Muhammad Khan Mu'ayyir al-Mamalik in June 1878, who was a son-in-law of Nasir al-Din Shah and who was in charge of the Mint. He received the title Mu'ayyir al-Mamalik in 1871. He died in 1913. (See Bamdad, vol. I, pp. 502-3).
