Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    Sir Alan Barlow Collection; and by descent.

    Published:
    Geza Fehervari, Islamic Pottery: A Comprehensive Study based on the Barlow Collection, London, 1973, no. 194, pl. 84;
    Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik: The Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London and New York, 1989, no. 209.

    This dish, like the preceding lot, is closely based on a Fifteenth Century Chinese Ming prototype (Sir Harry Garner, Oriental blue and white, London, 1954, pl. 16), although a certain amount of artistic freedom can be seen, individualising each piece. In contrast to Chinese wares, the points of the foliated rims on Iznik reproductions rarely align with the sprays in the cavetti or the points of the lobed lines framing the central medallion.

    Other examples of 'lotus scroll' dishes are in the Archeological Museum, Istanbul (Esin Atil, The Age of Sultan Suleyman The Magnificent, Washington D.C., 1987, p. 248, no. 170); Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Hetjens Museum, Dusseldorf; the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Museum, Lisbon; and the British Museum, London (Atasoy and Raby, nos. 199 – 201, 206 – 208).
