Footnotes

  • Built for the Cunard Line by J. & G. Thomson of Glasgow in 1881, “Pavonia” was a single screw iron steamer registered at 5,588 tons gross (3,490 net) and measuring 430½ feet in length with a 46 foot beam. Capable of 12 knots and with a cargo capacity of 4,000 tons in addition to her accommodation for 100 First and 1,060 Third class passengers, she entered service in September 1882 on the company’s principal Liverpool – New York route but transferred onto the Boston run in April 1884. Withdrawn for disposal after suffering severe storm damage early in 1899, the outbreak of the Boer War gave her a short reprieve as a troop transport but she was scrapped in 1900 once the War Office had released her.
