Footnotes
The British frigate Sapphire was classed as a sixth rate and designed and built by the superior class of shipwright apprentices at Portsmouth. Laid down in November 1825 and launched on 30th January 1827, she was measured at 604 tons and was 120 feet in length with a 34 foot beam. Mounting 28 guns, mostly 32pdrs., she carried a crew of 175 officers and men and spent a varied career across the world, including service in China during the so-called Opium War of 1839-42. One of her several roles in China was to transport troops up and down the coast and, when no longer fit for sea, she became a receiving ship at Trincomalee (Ceylon) where she was eventually sold out of the service in 1864
