A mid 17th Century petitpoint panel
Worked in silk threads to canvas ground depicting 'The Judgement Of Solomon'. The central rectangle with Solomon (in the form of King Charles I) sat beneath a canopy holding an orb and sceptre and wearing a crown, with a castle to background on his left and a lady (probably representing Queen Henrietta Maria) and two attendants in the background to his right. The two women in front of Solomon are in a dispute over two children. They both maintain that their child is alive and that the other is the mother of the dead child (lying centrally in front of Solomon). As a way of settling the dispute, Solomon commands that the living child be cut in half and shared between the two women (the executioner is shown with sword aloft in one hand and holding the child by the ankle in the other). The real mother gave way immediately and offered the child wholely to the other, making Solomon realise she is the child's real mother. A thin border of a spotted pattern separates the rectangle from an ornate wide border featuring varied flora and fauna to include a rabbit, a stag, a hound, pansies, sweet peas and pears. This is enclosed by a further spotted border. The edges of the figures/ plants/ animals having been detailed with metallic golden twist threads. The executioner's sword, Solomon's crown/ sceptre/ orb, the sun, the fine lady's crown and the pathway detailed with smooth and brightcheck purl. The executioner's armour and the roof of the castle having been detailed with metallic golden passing. The castle having been edged with golden lizardine. The entire background being scattered with loop chip spangles and the figures having further details of seed pearls and needlelace. Initialled to the top left hand corner of the rectangle with metallic smooth purl and bright check in the form of 'I.U.'. (some minor metal thread loss to the executioner's sword, surface grime, colour fading to the silk threads, mica missing from the castle window and tarnishing to the metal threads). Glazed and framed. 36 x 25.5cm.
