Footnotes

  • Yoshio Markino was born in Toyota, Japan with his birth name being Heijiro Makino. In 1893 at the age of 24 he departed from Yokohama bound for San Francisco where he studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, he remained in the city for four years.

    Markino first visited New York in 1897, with the current work being painted when he visited the US from 18th October 1923 to 9th March 1927.

    He settled in London in 1897, where he found his artistic niche which culminated in the 1907 publication The Colour of London where his illustrations where greatly admired. Further publications soon followed: The Colour of Paris, 1908; The Colour of Rome, 1908; The Charm of London, 1912 and many others.
