broken architectural pediment centred by a brass urn finial over a removable hygrometer and removable mercury thermometer (measuring to 130 degrees) flanked by a matching pair of shell inlaid medallions, the 8 inch silvered dial with counterbalanced blued steel hand and brass recording hand within a concave moulded bezel over a signed silvered level 98cms. (38.5ins.) high

Thomas Ripley started working in 1765 and was at various addresses in and around the Hermitage until 1790 when he brought his son James, whom had apprenticed to him in 1782, into the company to become Ripley & Son. This partnership lasted until 1805 when presumably he retired or died and James set out on his own.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
27.5% on the first £20,000 of the hammer price;
26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20,000 up to and including £700,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
