Footnotes

  • This fine example of 'good, even excellent quality' (Art Journal, 1861), dating from what is generally considered to be the artist's best period, was purchased from Cooper by Joseph Gillott (1799-1873), the celebrated steel pen manufacturer of Birmingham. Gillott amassed a fortune, much of which was spent on pictures, adopting the motto 'The best of everything is good enough for me'.

This composition, depicting cattle and sheep on the banks of the River Stour in the Whitehall meadows, to the West of Canterbury in the direction of Harbledown, was one of a number of Cooper's works in Gillott's collection, purchased by the RA between 1846 and 1853.
