Footnotes

  • Born at Market Rasen, the third son of a parson, Palmer was educated at King's College, London. To avoid a career in either the law or diplomatic service, he ran away to Canada at the age of seventeen, where he spent the next eleven years working on ranches and sketching horses. Patronage from General Field of the US army, set him on his career and in 1891 he returned to England.
He settled at Heston in Middlesex.

Considered by many to be the best horse painter of his generation, Palmer combined a high degree of draughtsmanship with an innate understanding of the animals he was painting.
He was a keen driving man and during the First World War, being too old for active service, managed a stud for the Royal Mail of 750 horses.
