Footnotes

  • We are grateful to Francesco Petrucci for suggesting the attribution to Pietro Paolo Vegli.

The present lot is after Voet's original portrait of Livio Odescalchi now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore. There is another similar version in the Museo di Roma, Rome. We know that Pietro Paolo Vegli did copies of portraits after Jacob Ferdinand Voet for Cardinal Flavio Chigi (1631-1693) (see Le Belle. Ritratti di Dame del Seicento e del Settecento nelle residenze feudali del Lazio, with essays by Francesco Petrucci, Rome, 2005, p.63).
Livio Odescalchi was the nephew of Pope Innocent XI, known for his reforms in papal administration and work against nepotism. In view of this, Livio Odescalchi, despite not marrying and being so closely related to the Pope, was never elected a cardinal. A contemporary at the papal court observed that his uncle kept him 'cosí sequestrato e ritirato, che non si vedeva mai in corte'.
