Friedrich Brentel was a German engraver, painter, calligrapher and designer who devoted much of his early career to mainly printed graphic work at the courts of the Dukes of Lorraine in Nancy and the Dukes of Württemberg at Stuttgart. These showed his ability to capture a building in perspective and enliven it with imaginitively distributed staffage. The onset of the Thirty Years War (1618-48), however, forced him to alter his production methods and from the beginning of the 1620s he worked almost exclusively as a miniaturist. He described his technique for painting miniatures in gum pigments on parchment in 1642 in Mahler und Illuminir Büchlein (Göttingen, Ubib., Cod.MS.Uffenbach 49). The present work shows the particular influence of Abraham Bosse, who is known to have influenced a number of Brentel's works in the mid-1630s.
