Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
    Leonard Koetser, London, 1946
Frost and Reed, London, 1948 as Michiel Simons

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer of the RKD for confirming the attribution after inspection of the original.

The current lot belongs to a group of still life paintings by an as yet unidentified artist who was active during the second half of the seventeenth century. The name `Pseudo-Simons` reflects that the artist's style is close to Michiel Simons (active 1648-1673). His pictures are characterised by the combination of a variety of similar elements; for example, the flowers, peeled lemon, and fruit arranged on a draped ledge.
