Footnotes

  • The nickname, `Orizzonte`, previously applied to Claude Lorraine, was earned by Jan Frans van Bloemen due to his facility for producing panoramic landscapes inspired by the classical landscapes of Gaspar Dughet and the campagna around Rome, where he spent much of his life after 1687. Celebrated by his contemporaries, Orizzonte produced some of the finest such paintings in Rome during the first half of the eighteenth century. They are now distributed among some of the great private collections and museums of Europe, including the Palazzo Doria-Pamphili, Rome, the Galleria Pallavicini, Rome, Attingham Park, Salop and Schloss Wörlitz, near Dessau.
