Footnotes

  • The staffage is by another hand, possibly Alessandro Magnasco, il Lissandrino. For comparison there are four landscapes by Onofri and Magnasco originally from the Depositi Gallery, Florence, on loan to the Palazzo Montecitorio and Palazzo Madama (see also Bollettino d'arte, 1967, pl.74, where a similar landscape collaboration between Onofri and Magnasco is illustrated, Witt Library mount).

Thought to have been a pupil of Gaspard Dughet, Crescenzio Onofri's landscapes of the 1670s are the closest to Dughet in his Roman work. It is believed that Onofri was in Rome for at least 20 years, and took part in the decoration of the residences of the Pamphili, Rospigliosi, Pallavicini and Colonna families. In 1675 he was listed as a member of the Accademia di San Luca. He was to move to Florence in 1696, where he worked until his death in circa 1712 for the Grand Duke. In this period he is known to have collaborated with various artists who painted the figures in his landscapes, including Livio Mehus, Francesco Petrucci and Alessandro Magnasco.
