Footnotes

  • We are grateful to Andrew Robison of the National Gallery of Art, Washington for confirming from a photograph that he believes the present drawing to be a work by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. He dates the drawing to 1742-44, relating it to drawings in the Ashmoleum Museum, Oxford, the British Museum, London and the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York.
The present inscription may be compared to Piranesi's hand on his sketches for ornaments on a carriage in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York (Casse di Carrozza, reproduced in Alessandro Bettagno, Disegni di Giambattista Piranesi, exhibition catalogue, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice, 1978, cat. and pl.50).
