Footnotes

  • Provenance: the Selwyn Parkinson collection, third sale at Sotheby's 11 October 1966, lot 251. A copy of this catalogue is included with this lot. During the Raised Anchor period, European style painted decoration at Chelsea was heavily influenced by contemporary porcelain from Vincennes. Sprimont was anxious to present his London customers with the latest fashion in porcelain and it is evident that he engaged artists from the Continent. Whether these are the work of a member of the Duvivier family, or the mysterious Jean Lefebre has been the subject of much discussion. What cannot be doubted is the quality of the painting on this fine dessert dish
