Lot 254
An important Chamberlain cabinet plate by Thomas Baxter circa 1820

Sold for £ 24,000 (US$ 29,655) inc. premium
An important Chamberlain cabinet plate by Thomas Baxter
circa 1820
in the 'Regent' body with gadroon and shell moulding around the rim picked out in gold, the cavetto fully painted by Thomas Baxter with an arrangement of shells on a richly grained wooden tabletop, surrounded by a black line, wider gilt band and a neoclassical border, 21.3cm diam, script mark referring to the New Bond Street address (minute patches of wear to the gilding, footrim drilled for suspension)

Footnotes

  • An almost identical composition of shells by Thoams Baxter is seen on the famous Swansea plate illustrated by John O Wilstead and Bernard Morris, Thomas Baxter The Swansea Years 1816-19, p 38. The only difference is that the arrangement rests on a grey marble rather than a wooden surface. After leaving Swansea, Baxter returned to Worcester where he worked first for the Flight, Barr and Barr partnership, quickly moving on to Chamberlain where he clearly replicated some of the work that he had recently produced at Swansea
