Lot 150
A rare Chaffers figure of a Nun circa 1756-58

Sold for £ 840 (US$ 1,154) inc. premium
A rare Chaffers figure of a Nun
circa 1756-58
seated reading from an open book, wearing a bright puce coloured hooded cape over a white habit carefully painted with colourful flowers and sprigs and with a red feathered edge at the hem, the book inscribed with neat black text and edged in yellow, the simple base outlined in green, 12.5cm (various glaze and body cracks)

Footnotes

  • Purchased: Jupiter Antiques, 1992. It has been suggested the Chaffers nun model was cast directly from a larger Bow version, itself copied from Meissen. A number of white Chaffers examples are known and it is likely all coloured Chaffers' nuns were decorated outside of the factory. The colouring pays no attention to the ecclesiastical nature of a nun's robes. Flower painting of this type occurs on Chinese porcelain enamelled in London and it is likely this figure was also enamelled in London. For another coloured Chaffers nun see Bernard Watney (1997), fig. 467.
