Footnotes

  • Philippe Parpette (1736-1808?) worked at Chantilly, moving to Vincennes as a flower painter in 1755. He left in 1757, probably to work as an enameller in Paris. After his return to Sèvres in 1773, he became one of the factory's principal flower painters, paid on a freelance basis thus allowing him to produce other work. In 1780, just after this plaque was painted, he became a salaried employee. See Rosalind Savill, Sèvres Catalogue of The Wallace Collection, Vol III, p 1055. For a Sèvres porcelain plaque painted in similar style by Le Guay, see The Elizabeth Parke Firestone Collection Part I, Christie's New York, 21 March 1991, lot 281
