Footnotes

  • Provenance: Bears an old exhibition label for Mr H Slater, Stoke. This plate is from a service given by Louis XVI to the Duchess of Manchester, the wife of the fourth Duke of Manchester, British Ambassador to the court of Versailles. As a reward for his involvement in the treaty to end the War of American Independence, The Duke was presented with a precious diamond-encrusted gold box and the Duchess received this service which was valued at 21,080 livres (about £680 at the time). It was purchased by the Prince of Wales in March 1802 from the Duchess, with the assistance of our founder, the auctioneer Harry Phillips. Harry Phillips negotiated a discounted price of £840 and received a 5% commission of £42. Most of the Duchess of Manchester service remains in the Royal Collection and a selection was exhibited in the Queen's Gallery in 1979, see the catalogue, Sèvres Porcelain from the Royal Collection, no.1, p. 22. For a detailed article about the Duchess of Manchester Service see Geoffrey de Bellaigue, 'A Diplomatic Gift', in The Connoisseur, June 1977, pp. 92-99
